Neuro - relates to our nervous system and the process by which experiences are received via our five senses.
Linguistic - relates to language, including thinking and non-verbal communication, which result in the coding of neural representations and how these are coded, ordered and given meaning.
Programming - relates to our ability to organise our neuro and linguistic systems to achieve outcomes.
NLP History
NLP was created and developed from the collaboration of Richard Bandler (psychologist) and John Grinder (linguist) in the early 1970s who met at the University of California - Santa Cruz. Their early work involved the study of three eminent exponents of therapy: Fritz Perls (Gestalt), Virginia Satir (Family therapist) and Milton Erickson (Hypnotist).
Their early intention was to produce a guide for future therapists who could draw on the language patterns and techniques used so effectively by the top exponents in ways that could be easily learnt and utilised. To do this they modelled what they witnessed and subsequently produced their findings.
This modelling technique identified remarkable similarities in the underlying patterns of all three therapists. From this modelling the patterns were modified and refined and an effective modelling structure was created. This model would be used for improving language skills, change effectiveness and allowing greater choice.
NLP Evolution
NLP evolved with the input of many other individuals Bandler and Grinder worked with in the early years and succeeding years; most notably Gregory Bateson and Robert Dilts.
The development of NLP provided a greater understanding of the processes, patterns and resultant behaviours which limit or expand human choices and consequent freedom of to make those choices. It offers a particular process to understand how people think, behave and feel and to give insight into how this process might be improved.
NLP Today
NLP is taught and utilised in major organisations and is applicable to any group or individual striving for excellence. Business, Law, Health, Education and sport; NLP is equally applicable; a testament to its value and versatility.
NLP in Our Opinion
NLP is foremost about an Attitude, Methodology and Technology and as such learning from books or through the hands of unskilled instructors will not lead to effective application. You wouldn't learn to drive from a book and nor should you learn NLP from a book. to get the best from NLP you need reliable and quality controlled teaching; Aspire4 is quality controlled by NLP creator Richard Bandler.
